FIRES AT NORTHCOTE.
COUNCIL TAKING ACTION. A special meeting of the Northcota Borough Council, convened by the Mayiw (Mr. Geo. Fraser), washeld last>aigiit id order to deal with the question pi fee prevention. The Mayor reported J that art option had been secured on tho section ad-„ joining the Council Chambers, which, ho suggested; should be acquired for a fire station and foreman's workshop and yard. He outlined proposals whereby an np-to-date firo brigade station and other buildings could be financed;. The .proposal made to the Birkenhead Council to connect the two reservoirs would, if granted, ensure an adequate supply of water in case of fire, while it was necessary to have the firebell, which had. been purchased, by the council, erected immediately. - " Messrs. H. H. H'tent,- E., Stn>ell, J. Broady, and R. Hopkins spoke in support oi: the Mayor's; remarks, *nd it unanimously decided to purchase the cite men- • ti.oned, and to remove the present fire brigade shed to that site. It was farther resolved to have the large firebell (formerly in use in tho Pitt Street fire station at Auckland) erected in front of the Council Chambers forthwith, the Mayor and Mr. Stilweli to supervise the work. The Mayor expressed pleasure that all difficulties, liad been lemoved regarding the erection of the firebeil,'while A hjer hoped it would not he long before an up-to-date station would be provided for the: brigade; on the site just acquired. Other members of the council- endorsed . the Mayor's remarks, and a system of electric fire alarms was suggested, which! could be installed when toe. fire station was erected
