THE RUGBY GAME. ..- ■ AUCKLAND UNION. MEETING OF MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE. , THE Management Committee of the Auckland Rugby Union met last night. Present: Messrs. M. J. Sheahan (chairman), F. J. Ohlson, S. W. Somerfield, C. P. Stichbury, T. H. Dawson,. T. Buxton, and fC. V. Langsford (secretary). • , The Wellington Rugby Union wrote confirming the arrangement to play a Welling-ton-Auckland representative < match at Auckland on July 19, and one at Wellington on August 30, the former being a special match for the Ranfurly Shield, and the second the usual annual match. For the match on July 19, the Wellington Union asked that they should, as previously arranged, be allowed the sum of £50 for expenses, and that. the net proceeds of the match should be divided between the two unions. ' It was decided to abide by this arrangement. ■ ' ' A letter was received from the secretary of the West Coast Rugby Union (South Island) stating that the union was keenly desirous of receiving a visit from the Auckland representatives, and suggested that a match should be arranged at Greymouth the Saturday after the match against Wellington at, Wellington. The writer also stated that a match could probably be arranged between the Auckland team and the Buller Union, with a £40 guarantee, on the previous Wednesday. For the match at Greymouth the West Coast Union was prepared to guarantee £75. ; Consideration of the suggestions was deferreu lor a weeK. ' The Pukekohe Rugby Union applied to be affiliated with the Auckland Rugby Union, and the application was accepted. A similar application was received irom the "King Couutry Rugby -Union, which is at > present under tne jurisdiction oi the South Auckland Rugby Union. Owing to this fact, and to -the. fact that sucn a course would entail an ; alteration in the boundaries of the unions implicated, it was decided to reply that the Auckland Union had no power in the matter, and that application must be made to the New Zealand Union. „. , „ "li • With reference to " Country .Week, the Thames Union stated that unless the original dates were adhered to they would reluctantly be compelled to withdraw from the competition, as owing to the next visit of H.M.S. 1 New Zealand they had arranged an excursion for June 21, the date formerly proposed for the final ."• match. This excursion was arranged to enable the Thames people to see bothffithe, battleship and the football match, and the union would have to fulfil its- part of the contract regarding the excursion, and the finances of the union were such that it would-be impossible to keep their players in Auckland for eight davs. which the dates last suggested would entail. The letter suggested that the competition should start on, June 18 and end on June 21. instead of lasting from June 23 to June 28. the dates now before the country unions. ■■■'•I ■ ■■■■■■" ■.-' : -.. : .'.: .-.■..'<-■•■-'--■••'. ■-/". . £ It was decided to forward the suggestion to the other unions interested.: . A matter depending upon the decision of the country unions was also mentioned in the letter, which stated that the : suggestion "that ?? the Thames-Auckland '■- match should bo played at Auckland on June 28 would ;be • impracticable, as : the Thames Union could • not make two trips to Auckland at.such a short interval. The letter su^sted- that the match should be played at Thames on that date- • : v

ROUGH PLAY. •VARSITY-COLLEGE RIFLES INCIDENT. • The incident of • alleged rough play in the College Rifles-University match last week which was the subject of a strongly- :; worded letter of protest to the Auckland Rugby , Union from Mr. Ross, secretary of the University Club, again .came before the Management Committee of the union last night, when the player in question and the referee, Mr. Nicholson,, waited on the committee at the latter's request. The player in question : stated that he had 'come to the meeting because he had been told that he Was the offender, but he knew nothing of the incident. He had at no : time devoted his attentions; to the injured "player, Wilson.- towards whom he had no ill-feeling whatever. He himself had _ no recollection of the incident, and he had given that answer to a number of his "friends who mentioned it to him after tho, 1 match, and named him: as the culprit. -On -one occasion during the match be had been struck by one 'of the opposing side, and had retaliated by pushing his opponent, ; and for which offence ho had been warned, but he had certainly no recollection of ■ being intentionally rough on any other occasion, or of kicking any player at all. v -The referee also stated that he knew nothirg of the occurrence. At no time duri ing the last quarter, when the incident was supposed to have occurred, did he ; see Wilson lying on the ground, as the letter ; had stated. He saw Wilson after the match : ; and went home with him, but had not received any complaint : from him. > He : cautioned the player .in question earlier in the match, and beyond that incident he V saw nothing whatever even verging on -; Touch play. Wilson could not have - been lyin'e on the ground for the time mentioned in the complaint without his noticing it. Mr. Lang3ford stated he had no doubt that the incident bad occurred, but he was 1 equally convinced that it had been greatly vexa—erated. He did not in the least doubt 1 the veracity of the accused player's stateI ment—an opinion which was voiced by the > other members of the committee. ■ gir Eventually, on the motion of Mr. Dawson, yfurther consideration of the matter was ;: ; deferred till the next, meeting, when Messrs. Ross and Wilson will 'be asked to attend.
