POLICE COURT NEWS.

TWO MONTHS FOR THEFT. The sitting of the police Court yesterday was presided over by Mr. E. C. Cutten, Charges of vagrancy and the- theft of £1 and a watch and chain, valued at 8s 6d, the property of Ernest Edward Balderson, were, preferred against Arthur John Fitzgibbons, aged 34 years. The accused was found at a late hour one night last week, trespassing on the promises of the Grosvenor Hotel. Ho was arrested, a watch and chain, the property of one of the inmates of the hotel, being subsequently found in his possession. The accused, who pleaded that he might be sent to Koto Roa. Island to get the drink out of his system, was sentenced to two months' hard labour. A middle-aged woman named Annie Enwright. was charged with having stolen the sum of 19a 6d from Ernest Thomas Langford. It was stated by Langford that he had met the accused in Grey Street, and that she had asked him to buy her a drink. He had tak<m her to a soft drinks shop, and had tendered a sovereign in payment foa two drinks When the change was placed on the counter, the accused had taken it, and placed it in her bag. A sentence of two months' hard labour was imposed." Four first offendero, who had. been locked up on Saturday for drunkenness, and had spent the week-end in the cells, were convicted and discharged. John Rutherford Craike, Samuel J. Lee, and George Se&gar, were each fined 10's, with an alternative of 48 hours in gaol.'
