WRECK OF THE RED PINE.
— I» AN INQUIRY OPENED. [BY TELEGRAPH.— PRESS association.* Nelson, Friday. , A magisterial inquiry into the cauee of the wreck of the. steamier Bed Pine on ', Stephen Island last Friday night was opened to-day before Mr. J. S. Evans, magistrate, and Captains F. Black and H. McNab, assessors. Captain Eden's evidence was taken. He ; stated that after leavintr Greymouth the } weather was fine until 7.45 o'clock on Fri- ' day evening, when fog eamo down, the I vessel then being on a course which should i have carried her to the north of Stephen's ' Island. The fog lifted and the vessel eonl tinued at full speed unbil 10.30 o'clock, > when the weather again became thick, and • the vessel was put at half-speed, with a sharp lookout. When within a ship's I length of land broken water was seen and \ the vessel put full speed astern, but she went on to the rocks and sank in a few [ minutes, the orew having time to get only one boat out.
