WELCOME RAIN.
IN TOWN AND COUNTRY. Welcome rain . fell again in heavy showers yesterday in the city and suburbsFor the 24 hours ended at 9 a.m. yesterday the rainfall recorded at the Albert Park was -77in. Light rain (telegraphs our Dargaville correspondent) fell yesterday afternoon for three hours, and relieved the acute water shortage. The effect of the downfall on pasturage cannot be over-estimated, but farmers are strongly hoping for a downpour to soak the soil. , Sawmiflers and others engaged in the timber industry would also welcome a heavy fall, as log supplies are being unduly restricted. Mr. H. B. Devereux, F.R.M.S-, reporting from Waihi at 8 a. in. yesterday, .stated:—"During Monday 1.48 in of rain fell, making a total for the 48 hours of l-61in. Tho weather conditions at the present time are very critical, and there is a probability of further heavy rains." The Auckland Provincial Farmers' Union received the following telegram from Mr. Devereux yesterday:"Heavy rains and stormy conditions may be expected centred about equinox and during April-"
