EXHIBITION PROGRESS.
'. INTEREST IN . THE SOUTH. FINE DISPLAYS ASSURED. Some little time ago, requests were received by the Exhibition Executive from the leading, Chambers of Commerce in the North Island that a representative of the executive should visit the various districts in the interests of the exhibition, and give whatever information might be .desired. The secretary, Mr. W. R. Holmes, undertook the work, and yesterday morning he returned to Auckland after a very successful tour. Amongst the various places ho visited were New Plymouth, Wanganui, Palmerston North, Wellington, Nelson, Napier and Hastings, and in each place ho explained to meetings of commercial men the- provincial courts scheme, with highly satisfactory »osults, the various Chambers of Commerce indicating that they would support the scheme. The question of space allocations will be considered at public meetings to be held in the various towns, each of which will undoubtedly bo" well represented. ■In Wellington Mr. Holmes met the Christchureh secretary, Mr. T. M. Meadows, and ascertained that in all probability a large number -of leading Canterbury firms would have • independent exhibits, exclusive of the provincial courts. Mr. Holmes, while in Wellington, also visited the various Government Departments, and it is practically certain that there will be exhibits by the Post and Telegraph, Tourists, Agriculture, Marine, Railways and Mines Departments, and probably the Defence Department. A large aquarium will form' an interesting feature of the Marine Department's exhibit. . In. New Plymouth it has been decided to take space for a provincial court, and a public meeting to he held in Stratford shortly will settle details of space and allocation of cost. Wauganui also gives promise of full representation. With regard to the question of space, Mr. Holmes stated yesterday that 40,000 square feet of the avail?- : -'A? '55,000 square feet in the main ' /'industrial hall has already been' applied for & . -nd of tho 'remainder, it li anticipated .At province;*'courts wi; take up from 8000 to IOfiOO square . eet. The space for the Government exhibits has not yet beer* determined. It is; evident that there -vwJL not be too much room, but the overflow of industrial exhibits will probably be accommodated in the machinery hall, which vill havs floor space oi* iilwut 50,000 square e>dt«. Applications for spae* yjj!l cl>se on March 31, but >fc is possible that applications will come in after thiht date. , With regard to freights, exhibitors will have to pay only one way for exhibit coming by water, while Mr. Holmes received a letter from the General ManJiger of Railways yesterday, confirming the previous announcement that subject to certain, conditions, exhibits will be carried free on the Government railways. / j:„ Mr. Holmes was very well satisfied 1 with tho results of his tour 4 and expresses himself quite satisfied that the exhibition will be a great success;.
