SOUTH AMERICAN MARKETS
TRADE POSSIBILITIES.
NEW ZEALAND PRODUCTS NEEDED.
Optimistic views are held by Mr. J. G. Moore, who was recently appointed honorary representative of the' Nsw Zealand. Government in tho Argentine, as to the possibilities of the South American market for certain New Zealand products. Mr, Moore has just completed a visit throughout the Dominion. He has visited this country on several previous occasions.
In the course of an interview with a Heiiald representative yesterday, Mr. Moore expressed the opinion that South America was one of the best markets for many New Zealand products. Only 20 days' journey separated the Dominion from Monte Video, the South American port of call, and the voyage round Cape Horn was a cool trip all the way, thus enabling perishable goods, such as apples and potatoes to bo carried without the aid of cold storage. Added to this there was a fortnightly steamer service between New Zealand and Monte Video.
" Two years' ago, I noticed, when visiting this country," continued Mir. Moore, " the possibilities for New Zealand produce in the Argentine, .and I arranged for several trial shipments of different lines of goods to bo taken to the South American Republic. I then found that woollen goods, jams, and preserves found a ready market, and how these goods have an assured sale in the Argentine. " Often the Argentine is troubled with drought.' The year before last there was a shortage of potatoes in the Argentine, owing to this cause, and I was able to obtain 300 tons of the tubers £rom New Zealand. They arrived in excellent condition, and realised good prices." * "In tho Republic there is a. big market for apples, and for years past its supplies have come chiefly from Chili. Apples from New Zealand and Tasmania are now meeting with strong favour. The year before last I took a few " hundred cases from New'' Zealand as a trial ' sllipiMfent, and they 'sold very well. : Last : season I endeavoured to get Argentine buyers to take contracts to buy apples from New Zealand. This however they were shy of doing. I therefore came over to this country and took 9000 cases back with me on the chance of their finding a market. The result turned out very well indeed, and' created a most favourable impression amongst the Argentine merchants, and the big buyers had then no further hesitation in contracting for the coming season's supplies. I have already signed contracts,to supply 30,000 cases of apples to the Argentine for the next season, and have secured space for that quantity on the steamers. I don't expect to have any difficulty in getting the apples, most of which will come from Nelson, Hawke's Bay, and Auckland."
He went on to say that he was shipping 50 Lincoln rams to Argentine by the Karamea, leaving Wellington on December 23. A demand had 1 set in for New Zealand sheep in the Argentine, he believed, owing to the fact that the entry of sheep from England had been prohibited, as a result of the prevalence of foot and mouth disease.
There was a good opening for New Zealand cement in the Argentine, but freights wore rather high at present.. From tests he had made, he was a trite certain the quality of the New Zealand cement was quite eounl to that imported from England and Germany. Another good market in' the Argentine was that for cheese, and when drought wis prevalent in the Republic large supplies of butter had to bp imported. In conclusion, Mr. Moore stated that he had instituted innuiries with a view to the possibility of New Zealand m*Dt>ly, irig raw and dressed timbers, rabbits, bacon and ham. coal, and many other products to the Argentine.
