A BUST HOLIDAY SEASON.
PASSENGER TRAFFIC ON
.TRAINS.
RAILWAYS LOADED WITH GOODS.
Anticipating .. tho period of excursion, rates on the railways, holidaym'akers are postponing their journeys until December 18 and later. Meanwhile, passenger traffic on the railways is very slack. Large numbers of inquiries at tourist. offices indicate that this condition will be completely changed when the cheap fares commence, and a very busy holiday season in this part of tho Dominion is anticipated. There are no cheap fares for goods, and at present the traffic is extremely brisk, and showing a marked increase upon the volume in previous corresponding periods. The proximity of Christmas is, of course, the explanation of this great volume of traffic, as every customer of the system is endeavouring to clear off his country orders before tho holidays. A natural reflex of this unusual demand is a shortage of rolling stock in some quarters, of which the inadequate supply of trucks at the Taupiri mines, reported yesterday, is an instance. 'Efforts are being made by the authorities to handle the whole traffic as expeditiously as possible, and no serious complaints have been made of delays.
