THE SCHOLARS' WEEK.
WHOLE OR HALF-HOLIDAYS?
KING'S COLLEGE PROPOSAL.
A proposition of much interest to teachers and scholars alike was made by Mr. C. E. Major, headmaster of King's College, at the breaking-up ceremony at the college yesterday. It was proposed, ho said, to institute a system of giving scholars two -holidays in each week instead of the clear Saturday.. The idea was new to Auckland, but worked excellently in the big hoarding-schools in the south; and it had vary groat advantages for both the scholars and their work. Next year, the school would probably have 150 scholars. Even now it was very difficult to provide 100 boys with occupations on Saturdays on the restricted area available, and the difficulty would be increased with the greater number. Boys worked better in the mornings than in the afternoons, and would benefit by . substituting Saturday morning for Wednesday afternoon, and as the week-end interval would be shortened, tho continuity of the work Would bo improved. The masters were, indeed, the only ones who would have to make any real sacrifice, for even the school games would be greatly benefited by the change. The masters had at once decided, however, that in the interests of the college and of the boys the change should be made. It remained to be teen whether the parents of the boys would approve of it, and the present* system would be continued in the coining year, while inquiries were made among the parents to ascertain their views.
