IMPROVEMENTS IN HAND.
A ],aiw;u anion tit of work is being clone in the Public Library and Art Gallery at pi-went. Some repairs to the library reading'room were authorised by the City Council last evening. The walls, ceilings, and passages, which have become verv dis- , coloured, are to be renovated in white. 1 Additional reading slopes --for 16 newspapers are to be provided. ■ Cork carpet Ls to l>e laid in the readingroom, reference library, and lending library, wherever it is needed, for the sake of "cleanliness and quiet. The main stairs are to be " done up" by repairing the, leather treads and fitting brass nosing : ;>nd the front-doors are to lie painted. Six electric radiators are to be placed in the reference library. hen the work in the Art Gallery is finished, the pictures are to be arranged in the. new -galleTy by a hanging committee; consisting of the Mayor. Messrs. J. W. Tibbs, T- W. Leys, W.' Pay ton, W. Wright, and H. Wallace. The alterations bei iitr carried nut in the Art Gallery were briefly reported upon by the Mayor to the" City Council last night. He stated that the Mackelvie collection would be placed in the old Council Chamber. Other rooms had been added, and altogether the amount of room available would be two or three times as great as lK'fore.
