LAWN TENNIS.

AUCKLAND PROVINCIAL

ASSOCIATION.

MONTHLY MEETING.

'.".. ■ The monthly meeting of the Auckland i '(provincial Lawn Tennis Association was held 'at the Sports Club on Thursday evening, the president, Mr. W. R. Holmes, in tho chair. The Auckland championship tournament, ,on January 25 and 29 and February 1, was authorised by tho New Zealand Association. :'-.'■'' It was decided to make application to the "den and Epsom Club for tho uso of their lawns for tho championships. The followj n _ •wero appointed a committee to control the tournament:—Messrs. A. A. Martin, A. §_ Q. Brown, F. J. Ohlson, H. G. Palethorpe, L. A Longuct, and W. R. Foe. ■ / ' Mr. Fee'a motion, of which notico had "been given, to rescind the previous resolution with reference to tho holding of a handicap tournament at Christmas or tho \ow Year, evoked a long discussion. It vas finally decided to hold a handicap tournament on January 1, 2, and 4. The committee appointed for the tournament was requested to approach the Remitcra Club for the uso of its lawns, and to offer for jame an amount not exceeding £5, and 25 per cent, of the net profits. In tho event of the Romuera Club refusing the application tho committee was empowered to make satisfactory arrangements with somo other club. Mr. Holmes has generously offered to provide trophies for both the wen's and ladies' singles. The committeo appointed consists of the following: Messrs. G. L, Taylor, H. Andrew. Hamlin, H. A. Milnes, ■ (J. Best, H. R. Cooke, aud W. R. Fee, with power to add. ' Th«i Opotiki Tennis Club wrote apylying ' for particulars of affiliation. ~. Messrs. H. R. Cooke, A. A. Martin, and H. Q>. Palethorpo were appointed to wait on tho Mayor, with a view to having courts ! ; laid down at tho Stanley-street entrance to :':'• fa Domain. It was pointed out that if the ' ; lawns were laid down that particular entraneo would bo trreatly improved before tho .'opening of tho Exhibition. This application does not in any way affect the association's 'endeavours to cot association lawns laid • down in Cornwall Park.

A general discussion ensued as to details > in connection with tho visit of tho English ■-' team, and a reception committee was set • : up to entertain tho visitors. '"■ Tho next meeting of tho association was '";'' fixed for January 9, and in future meetings ■'of the association will bo held in Mr. Lon/gueta office, Wright's Buildings, Fortstreet, ;'. NOTES AND COMMENTS. ~; Matters are now well forward for the V test match, New Zealand v. tho English ' •'team, which will bo played on. the Eden and 'Epsom lawns on December 21 and 23. The Reputation which the Englishmen have •< achieved by winning tho Davis Cup contest "is sure to causo great public interest in '--the match. This will be the first time that : a match has been played between England 'and Now Zealand, and there is a certain -treat in 6tore for all those who are fortunato M enough to see tho match. Arrangements aro ''■'Being made to erect a stand for the con•i'venience of spectators. In a few days j •' season, stand, and entrance tickets will be • obtainable, and stand seats may be reserved. '■"'•New Zealand will bB represented by her ■strongest teams, namely, Messrs. OUivier, Swanston, Fisher, and Peacock. On each S*V day two singles and one double will bo 'C; played. ' '■ The inter-club matches will be advanced a .further stage this afternoon. In tho first grade West End meets Bemuera and Parnell meets Eden and Epsom. The former match ; should provide an interesting contest', and the result is very open. Remuera will be without the services of Abbott, but most of J,;. the West End players are very short of practice, especialhr Keith and Upton, who ; have scarcely touched a racquet this season. .' In the" Parnell v. Eden and Epsom match .. tho latter club should, win comfortably. .' , The secretaries of clubs are reminded that :' the names of players for their respective teams for tho Dunlop Shield contest should '„; reach the secretary of the association not ,; - later than Wednesday next. Tho following : clubs have entered teams for the contest: —

Remuera, Parnell, Onehunga, Devonport, v Auckland, and West End. si: The question has arisen as to whether a ~*, player is entitled to represent a club in- ,. contest, although playing for another r' dob in the inter-club matches. The rules ~ wry clearly say that no player can repro- : sent more than on© club in a season.

; I' In Wellington rain again interfered with | • last Saturday's inter-club matches, and all j :; matches set down on the grass courts at I .'Day's Bay had to bo postponed. In the ! ( men's senior competition the only match >\ played -was Brougham Hill v. Newtown, which was won by the former by 3 rubbers j to 3, 8 sets to 7, 75 games to 6.1. At the 'present stage it appears a3 if Victoria Col- ".; lege would ultimately turn out the winners -' of this year's championship. In the ladies' ; ; senior competition, Wellington defeated--1 Brougham Hill by 6 rubbers to nil, 12 sets to 2, 81 games to 44. The Auckland Association very wisely reversed its previous decision not to hold a ■.■'■■ handicap tournament at Christmas or the New Year. The delegates present at tho meeting were nearly all in favour of the tournament, although it was pointed out that there was great difficulty in obtaining suitable lawns, and that some of the previous tournaments had resulted in loss to the association. However, the desire amongst the younger players to have tho tournament was so strong that tho meeting decided that it was the duty of the association to accept ''too responsibility of holding the tournament. la order to provide against possible loss, the value of trophies was fixed at a little loss than last year, and, in addition, Mr. Holmes's offer to provide the trophies for the winner of both men's and ladies' singles will also considerably cut down the expenses. Indications are that the tournament will be one of the most successful yet. ■Entry forms will be obtainable in tho course of ft few days. I; ■'■ :"Huka,". of tho Post, says:— "It was • > news. to hear from South Africa that a 'German team of tennis players was likely to visit Australia this year. Yet the Transvaal Lawn Tennis Association instructed its representative, Mr. Kitson, who was in England, to endeavour to arrange for the tnsnnan team to visit Australia this year, breaking its journey at Capetown or Durban, 'and playing some matches. Of course, New Zealand does not hear all that goes on, as ;;.: Jar as teams coming to Australia arc concerned, and the sooner the time comes for - cutting the painter with the Australasian Association tho better, for a great many reasons." R. D. bourne, the Taranaki player, is at present in England, and has competed in the Tulse Hill tournament. Ho was beaten in the third round cf tho championship by Hill, 8-6, 6-2. In tho handicap Wybourno was on the own 40 mark, vet .-oil had 15 2-6, and Wybourne in the championship scored 10—8, 7—9. Thou :•?: Lovell retired. Evidently tho New Zealander was overrated. , 5 It is strange how tho following informa- «'.. tion was obtained which anpears in the ..;:; official organ of the Lawn Tennis Association. England:—"There- was a welcome ■ ■addition to our oversea visitors at Tulso "HI in 11. D. Wybourne, who has won v m «»y events in New Zealand. Wybourne, who has oil the necessary physical attributes ; J? ™°. Same, has been holiday-making in :■> Wo British Isles for over two months, and ~ giving lawn tennis a rest. Thus ho was not ■ aaequately equipped for his entirely new experience of playing on rubble courts. In ~, Zealand tho game is exceptionally well ; a ißvoured by high quality grass courts, and iiarcl court playing has yet to forgo ahead « n that country." Tl CraysidV tournament, with which went the Welsh' covered court champion- . *tupa. had A. Wallis Myers as referee and nandicappor.
