SENIOR CADET PRIZES.

MRS. GODLEY'S WISHES.

A NATIONAL FUND.

[BY TELEGRAPH. I'RESS ASSOCIATION.

Chhistcjiuiich, Saturday. At a meeting regarding the establishment of a fund to provide shooting trophies for senior cadets, it was reported that local subscriptions received totalled £25 4s 6d. The Mayor 6tated that subscriptions at first came in slowly, but latterly the response had been more generous, and he thought it -would be wise probably to circularise country residents for contributions.

Mrs. Godley (wife of General Godley) wrote that her idea had been to have a central fund, in order that the movement might bo a national one, and that the larger cities and towns might help the poorer and scattered districts and back

blocks. When it was ascertained how much money was available a decision could bo arrived at as to the valne of the prizes, and cups of equal value could be given to each of the 363 senior cadet corps in the Dominion. If the general opinion in Christchurch was that the money raised locally should be spent locally, her purpose would be assured so long as each company got a cup. The cups could. be challenge cups, the cadet making the best score in the annual musketry course to hold the cup for a year, his name to be engraved on it. A medal might also be given. There were about 30 companies in the Christchurch district., and a fund of £200 should provide quite good cups and medals for the first year. Possibly the companies would bear the expense of medals in subsequent years. Lady Islington, had given a, Dominion challenge cup for the company making the best aggregate score.

The Mayor said that after heaving Mrs. Godley's views he was of opinion that it would be advisable to support a national movement rather than a. local one.

It. was resolved to hand the money over to Mrs. Godley for the formation* of a national fund.
