i I -7— i 1 / CITY COUNCIL JOKING. A v.vporn of irresponsibility blew through the City Council Chambers last night, and for a few minutes infected several of the members. Mr. .J. C. Gleeson asked what was to be done to cope with the dust, nuisance, and mentioned the proposal to use laranaki oil. The Mayor remarked that they would have to do what they could with water; but on a further ques- , tion by Mr. Gleeson the city engineer said ■ that a trial was shortly to be made with a tar-spraying machine. Mr. R. T. Michaels followed with a ' question. "Is there any chance." he j asked,, "of our getting a by-law brought < in against ladies' hatpins ? A man had his ' eye injured here recently. In Sydnev '. about 200 ladies were summonsed." ! Mr. A. J. Entrican: I rise to a point of j order. Mr. Michaels is 'an interested party. 1 Mr. Michaels moved that the By-laws ! Committee should go into the matter at its next meeting. The Mayor: Any councillor may supply particulars of any genuine instance of eves arid hatpins coming into contact. But the bare statement by Mr. Michaels of its having happened is hardly sufficient evi- I dence. to base, a by-law upon. The members of the Council were laugh- t ing too heartily to remember that Mr. 1 Michaels had proposed a motion, and the a matter dropped. t
