MUNICIPAL RELIEF FUND.
WELLINGTON MAYOR'S PLAN. [BY TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL, COBEESrOVDEXT.] WELLrxcTox, Saturday. Suggestion's made recently'by the Mayor of Wellington (Mr. D. McLaren) that steps should be taken to establish something in the nature oj a municipal distress relief fund have been endorsed and" supported by quite a number of peopleMr. McLaren told a Times reporter yesterday that many persons had spoken to him on the subject, and each one had commended his plan a,-; being very desirable. "A little later on," said the Mayor, ''I think I shall circularise a number of people inviting them to <neet- me for the purjwse of putting the scheme upon a. working basis. The more I think over it, the more J feel that it would be of real benefit to have some regularised scheme of contributions to such a fund, because periods constantly occur when very numeroru demands arc made upon the citizens within a short space of time. These frequent calls for assistance have given rise a* many complaints. 1 think that .-.iter discussing the scheme with, the people horn lam going to invite ffi will evolve a, system by which a fund may b'j regularly sustained without the need of making excessive < alls upon the cilizv-u:--."'
