COMING FISHING SEASON
PROMISE OF GOOD SPORT
LOWER WAIKATO PROSPECTS.
In conversation with a Herald representative last evening, Mr. W. 11. Hazard, president of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society, stated that indications for. the coming fishing season, which opens in the Auckland district on November 1, were distinctly favourable. Tho society had been very busy during the past few months in stocking the rivers and streams with yearling fish, and this had had a good, effect. This was particularly tho case with the Lower Waikato, which was so badly affected by the flood of 1907. Most of the fish in this river were drowned during this period, owing to particles of pumice being collected by tho flood water and becoming embodied in tho gills of the fish, choking them. Indications were that the Lower Waikato had recovered from this flood. Tho smaller flood of last week, Mr. Hazard said, had not as far as was known had any evil effects on the trout. Reports from the South state that in most of the acclimatisation districts the prospects for the season were good. • The season opens in the South on October 1, owing to tho . fish being in condition earlier than in tho Auckland district, where they are later owing to the warmer climate.
