THE SHORTAGE OF LABOUR.

AUCKLAND STILL IN WANT.

AN I'M EMIGRATION SCHEME..

There is still a shortage of labour in Auckland. Tho dearth of workers is particularly felt , by manufacturers, who experience difficulty in securing the services of sufficient, numbers of men, girls, and boys.

At tho present time manufacturers in Auckland have vacancies for 52 men and 402 women, while boys cooking to learn a trade can also be placed. This shortage of labour has been felt, in Auckland for some time, and the growth of trade tends to make the position more serious, while if ' manufacturers cannot obtain sufficient hands to cope with the work offering it is inevitable that the expansion of business must bo retarded. The industry chiefly affected- in Auckland is the clothing trade, but most of tho other industries require moro workers than are available.

With tho object of finding a remedy for the trouble tho Auckland Industrial Association has frequently discussed tho question. Recently a- scheme was decided upon recommending the appointment of a selection committee— representing various industries—who, it was proposed, should visit Great Britain and endeavour to sot up a stream of emigration and induce people in the industrial cenIres of the Old Country to como to New Zealand. The proposal will bo further discussed at a conference of representatives of tho Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch Industrial Associations, which will bo held at Wellington towards tho end of this month. The Auckland Association's delegates at tho conference will be Messrs. S. J. Ilarbutt, John Wileon, Thos. Hodgson, and T. B. Whitton.
