THE CIVIL SERVICE.

COMMISSION'S TASK.

"AT LEAST 12 MONTHS' WORK."

[BY TELEGRAPH.PRESS ASSOCIATION.]

GiiiiisTCHtrncH, Saturday. "The work that the Civil Service Commission has set out to do will, if done properly, take at least 12 months," declared an official of the local Civil Service Association to a reporter last night. "In the first place there are tho affairs of 41 separate Departments to be looked into with branches large and small thfcTUghouHi the Dominion, and it is perfectly absurd to suppose that the Commission can furnish a report of any value by June 25. Tho Commission will experience great difficulties in their work for the reason that there are so many Departments carrying out duties entirely foreign to .those to which the members of the Commission have been accustomed. The Commission is of an entirely mercantile or commercial character, and the members will soon find that it is impossible to run the public service on strict commercial lines. The service methods are tho result of years of thought, and they are constantly being improved."

REQUEST OP THE ASSOCIATION.

AN OFFICIAL REPRESENTATIVE. [by telegraph.—press association.] Wellington, Sunday. The executive of the New Zealand Civil Service Association* has asked the Prime Minister (Hon. T. Mackenzie) to allow the association to have an official representative at the sitting of the Civil Service Commission, with tho right to ask questions. Branches of the association are to be circularised by the Executive Committee for expressions of opinion as to holding a Dominion conference of association delegates.
