MANUKAU COUNTY PARTITION

ELECTION OF COUNCILS. . The Manukau Conference, which consists of delegates from local bodies in the Manukau County, met at the A. and P. Rooms, in High-street, yesterday morning. The conference has supervised the affairs of the county for some years. The Counties Act came into force on April 1, and the conference has decided, on the partition of the county into two areas, the southern half to be known as Franklin, with Pukekohe as the, headquarters, and, the northern half to retain the old nam© of Manukau. Active steps are being taken to elect a council in the Franklin area.

There were 16 delegates present at the meeting, Mr. E. Allen presiding. Messrs. W. F. jMassey and F. W. Lang, M.IYs, were among tnoae present. Mr. J. T. Stembridge (secretary) explained that it might bo another : two months before the rolls were ready for the ridings in the Franklin County; and he, thereiore, could not hazard an opinion as to when the' election for the Franklin County would bo held. It was announced that the Government hud forwarded a cheque for £81 6s Bd, as kauri gum license fee. It was decided to bank the sum, on the understanding that it was to be divided equally between the two new councils when elected. ..

The adjustment of the ridings of the two districts, as, recommended by the exe l cutive, was approved: . Votes of thanks were passed to Messrs. Massey, Lang, and the chairman. The sum of £10 was unanimously voted to the secretary as an appreciation of his services. In the afternoon, at the same rooms, representatives from local bodies from the new Manukau County district met, about eight delegates being present. Mr. E. D. McLennan presided. It was decided that the first election for the new County Council should take place on the first Saturday in June, unless the secretary, Mr. A. Bell, required the time to be extended. It was further decided that the first meeting of the Council should take place in Auckland.
