WILL THEY RESIGN?

MR. CAWKWELL TO STAND AGAIN.

With regard to the resolution passed at the annual meeting of the Remucra ratepayers on Thursday evening calling upon the members of the Board to resign, it is not at all certain whether the members concerned will decide to give effect to the resolution.

The position is that three members Messrs. C. A. Cawkwell, Erni Bond, and A. G. Pilkington— to retire, the election to fill tho vacancies being fixed for next Tuesday. Mr. Cawkwell anticipated his retirement by resigning a few days ago, while the terms of the other two members expire by effluxion of time. Both Messrs. Bond and Pilkington intend to seek re-election, while Mr. Cawkwell, in the course of a conversation with a reporter yesterday, said ho intended to seek re-election as a vindication of himself against the slanderous insinuations that had been circulated against him. The members of tho Board whose terms of office do not expire until next year are Messrs. J. S. Dickson and P. Spencer. When Mr. Dickson was approached by a Herald reporter yesterday, he said he had no information whatever to give as to his intentions. Mr. Spencer, when spoken to, said he certainly would not resign as a result of the resolution referred to. He was elected at the head of the poll in each of the last two elections. In view of this, he thought it was only fair that his supporters should have a say in the matter, and considered that it would be in the best interests of the district to place himself in their hands. Probably, after the election on Tuesday, he would call his supporters together to discuss the matter. Should either Mr. Spencer or Mr. Dickson decide to resign, an election to fill the vacancy would have to take plate within 25 days from the date of resignation.
