UNIVERSITY HOME SCIENCE.
NEW COURSE IN OTAGO.
As a result of a Senate decision, the Ot&go University College lias established a Chau? of Home Science. A course of lectures has been arranged by Professor Boys-Smith, and the lectures and practical work for the degree and diploma courses will recommence on April 9. ~,
In connection with this new departure in university teaching, Mr. James Allen, M.P., Chancellor of the University of Otago, received a letter, as follows, from the Inspector-General of Schools, under date September 6 last:— "In reply to your letter, dated August 30, I have to say that there appears to be evidence of an increasing desire on the part of teachers and others directly concerned with the education of girls to extend the scope and improve the character of the instruction in domestic subjects now generally given in primary, secondary, and technical .schools. The chief obstacle so fa* to progress in the direction desired has been the difficulty of obtaining locally teachers qualified to give instruction in homo science as distinguished from cocking, dressmaking, etc. In some teachers have been, or are being imported. There seems to be good reason for believing that a knowledge of domestic science and home economics will in the near future be regarded as a sine qua non in connection with the appointments to positions on the staffs of manual training centres, district high schools, secondary schools, and technical schools."
