UNITED STATES POLITICS.

THE PANAMA CANAL TOLLS. N A CHECK ON RAILROADS.

By Telegraph.— Association.-Copyright. (Received March 1, 12-50 a.m.)

Washington, February 29. Representatives of commercial organisations in the leading cities are urging President Taft that no transcontinental railroad companies should be permitted to operate steamship lines through the Panama Canal. The representatives advocated free tolls through the canal or tolls favouring American shipping. President Taft plans a speechmaking tour to explain the position of this and various other public questions, and to further his Presidential candidature. He intends to visit Chicago, New Hampshire, and the cities of the North-east.
