THE COMMONWEALTH TARIFF.

Sydney, February 28. The presidential address at the inter-State Conference of Chambers of Manufacturers complained of the absence of complete revision of the tariff. The recent amendment ■was inadequate. Australia must face the fact, that wool as a staple industry will diminish appreciably, that the coal and metal deposits wiK eventually work out, and that agriculture and manufacture, on the contrary, will constitute the- basis of future prosperity. To this end. in order to secure a place in the great markets of the Pacific, Australian agriculture and manufacture must have the stimulus of a maritime carrying enterprise. PREFERENCE TO UNIONISTS. The manufacturers' conference adopted resolutions against preference to unionists (as being a pernicious syetem, meaning coercion and interference with the liberty of the subject), and in favour of the encouragement of private enterprises. Tho speakers condemned CJovernment competition with private industry.
