NORTHCOTE BOROUGH.

NEW MUNICIPAL OFFICES. THE municipal offices just completed for the Northeote Borough Council, at the. corner of Queen, Pearl, and Bay Streets, were officially opened last night by the Mayor (Mr. H. Oadness). The opportunity -was taken by the members ot the Council of entertaining past members of the Council, the borough officials, the architect, and builder of the borough chambers. A pleasant evening was spent, and iu addition to musical items, the following toasts were honoured, which drew forth several interesting reminiscences of the progress of the district:—" The Kin?," proposed by the chairman (Mr. H. Cadness); "Our Quests," proposed by Mr. Geo. Fraser, and responded to by Mr. Ales. Bruce (first Mayor of Xorthcote), and Mr. W. N. Eushbrook; "The Mayor (Mr. H. Cadness) and the Mayoral Candidate (Mr. Geo. Fraser)," proposed by Mr. Van Veen and supported by Messrs. Alex. Bruce and A. M. Mowlem: " The Northcote Borough Council," proposed by Messrs. B. H. Hunt and Arthur Greenslade, and supported by Messrs. Bolland. Gray, and Tyor, and responded to by Messrs. J. B. Tonar and John Broady; " The Architect (Mr. W. H. Glover), and Builder (Mr. Beg. Shepherd)," proposed by Mr. A. M. Mowlem; "The Council's Officials," proposed by Messrs. Jas- T. Fearnley and Arch, Campbell, and responded to by Messrs. A. Ernest Greenslade (town clerk), P. Colvin (foreman of works), and J. Williamson (turncock); "The Ladies," proposed by Mr. Van Veen and responded to by Mr. Arch. Campbell. In the course of his remarks the Mayor said the Council was not only in a more satisfactory position for the transaction of business in having premises owned by the borough, but in reality was effecting economy, as the interest payable for the new building was less thai) the rent paid bv the Council in the past. All the meetings of the Council would in future be held at the new chambers.
