THE FERRY BUILDINGS.

THE BOARD'S ARRANGEMENTS DISSATISFIED TENANTS. The Harbour Board's decisions in regard to the alterations in the Ferry Buildings, necessary to provide properly for the accommodation of the traffic, have been communicated to the two ferry companies concerned, and at its meeting yesterday the Board received replies from them. The secretary of the Takapuna Tramways and Ferry? Company wrote that the suggested accommodation would not suit the company's requirements. The directors of the company therefore asked that the matter be referred back to tho committee of the Board and a deputation on the subject received. It was decided to reply that the Board would consider any representations the company wished to make, and the subject was referred back to tbe committee in accordance with the request. The manager of the Devonport Ferry Company (Mr. A. Alison) wrote that as office accommodation was essential to the working of tho company's business, they had decided to accept the Board's offer, notwithstanding that the rental (£9) was, in their opinion, higher than the company should be called upon to pay. They asked whether the rental of £9 per week from the time tho tenancy commenced would cover the full cost for office rentals, seeing that as the Ferry Buildings would bo completed, before the wharf was ready, the company would have to go on using its present offices for somo time after the tenancy commenced. The company further asked that as the offices were built for ferry purposes they should bo leased i for a reasonable term instead of upon a weekly tenancy. The company asked that certain modifications, including turnstiles, should be embodied in the office accommodation. It approved the arrangement of berths, subject to the low landings of the wharf being built tip and the wharves widened and altered where required, and spaces being left for new improved passenger gangways, for which the company would provide the. stage portions.

This communication was also referred to the committee.
