Tho sudden turn ef events came about;, _ in connection with the bridging of the \ 1 Mangakara stream. It appears that »j; r Government grant was issued for the *V r widening of the Mangakara Road, and for 3 the building of small bridges and culvert*.; A motion was moved to the effect that the 1 . Minister for Public Works be requested i to allow the Council sufficient out of the > grant available to erect the bridge. '0m * considerable discussion followed, and the t chairman said that according to a letter's i from the resident engineer at Stratford ■ , the money had been voted for a specific ll . purpose. An amendment was moved in- ■ structing the overseer to draw up plans ' i and specifications for tlm spending of the grant as dictated by the Public Works D<fc I partment. On the amendment being put, . the voting was equal, Messrs. Lowrv, ;f Currie, and Lovcday (chairman) voting for, and Messrs. Kelly, Risk, and Saadison against. Tho chairman refused. to ,- exercise his casting vote, and Messrs. ' Sandison, Risk, and Kelly left the table, I and shortly afterwards each wrote out hi» .? resignation, and handed it to the chairman. Mr. Risk : The chairman allows too much personal interest into business. The Chairman : That's not the first time you have made that statement.
