At the half-yearly meeting of the Broken Hill Proprietary Company the chairman announced that the manager was at present in Europe collecting information relating to the manufacture of iron and steel, with a view to extending the proprietary's enterprise. The company possessed large deposits of ironstone at Iron Knot, South Australia. The Commonwealth's requirements for iron and steel rails would bo large for the next few years. : - WHARF LABOURERS' DISPUTE, Sydney, February 24. Conferences between the Coastal Steam-* ship owners and the Wharf Labourers*' Union resulted in an agreement being ar- : rived at regarding wages and conditions of work. A deadlock occurred, however, over the employment of permanent wharf hands of the Newcastle-Hunter River Company. The union, demands - the discharge of the men, and this the company, , refuses to do. The union therefore declines to work the company's wharf. '

CYCLING RACE. MELBOtntXK, February 25. Thirty thousand people witnessed ' tjia final day of the six days' cycling. Seven teams remained in yesterday morning. ; Sis were level, and Doetzauor (Germany) and Bell was a lap behind. The latter, after 141 hours' riding, failed to Recover the deficit, and retired. Hehir headed Gascoyne past the 2000 mile mark in the last three-lap sprint. Goullett made a wonderful effort, and just managed to beat Lawson, with Clark close up. The international race was won by Lawson, with Mitten (America), second, Clark and McNamara (Australia) third, Walker and Grenda (Australia) fourth ,and Gascovno and lioyd {international), fifth.
