The first practical step towards the construction of the trans-continental railway has been token by the /Federal Government calling for tenders for 135,000 ■ tear*-- -— of steel rails. Mr, King O'Malley (Secre- ■ ' tary for Home Affairs) claims that it will be the biggest railway work in the world. , ► It will cover 1063 miles, and will be car- ; ;;; ried out by day labour. . Eighteen hundred men will bo required.%» •Asked what preference would ; be. extended to English manufacturers, Mr. O'Malley eaid that outside Australia tenders would bo called for only in England.
