The last match of the Auckland provincial championship tournament took place at tho West End Club's courts on Saturday afternoon, when Dr. Keith and C. F. Quinnell, both of the West End Club, met in the final of the men's singles. Dr. Keith won by three sets to nil: 6—3, 6—4. 63. Keith made a good start by getting the first three games. His opponent got the next two. after some hard plugging. For the remainder of the set the winner was in an aggressive mood, and" ran but six games to three. Tho second get was the best-contested of the three. Quinnell played with great determination, but the doctor's good lobbing kept his on tho back lino a lot, depriving him of scoring opportunities at the net. Tho set. eventually went to Keith: 64. For the first six games of tho final set honours were oven; then Quinnell showed signs of the strain of a lot of trotting about tho court. Ho had to bo content with playing a defensive game, but he failed to cope with Keith on the ground strokes, Tho winner led, 5—3; then Quinnell made a game effort for the ninth game, but to no purpose. After many deuces Keith eventually got the necessary ace, set, and match. Both Dr. Keith and Quinnell are players of long exnerience, and the tactics introduced provided much interest for the small band of spectators who viewed the match. Quinnell is a very clever volleyer at close quarters, and Keith evidently realised that to gain success he should keep his man on the back line as much as possible. This he succeeded in doing, and placing with unerring judgment, finished up most of the rallies with a cleverly-directed stroke. Quinnell played up gamely to the, last, but was pitted against a cleverer player. Had tho loser been a harder hitter, and played more on the offensive, the result might have been different. THE HOWARD SHIELD. [by TELEGRAPH.— own- cohbespokdest.] TE KUITI. Saturday. For a second time this season the Te Kuiti Tennis Club successfully defended the Howard shield at Te Kuiti to-day. against Mangapeehi. The gamo was well contested throughout, Te Kuiti winning by six sets to five.
