TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION'.] CHJIISTCHURCH, Saturday., At an athletic meeting, held to-day. under tho auspices of the Canterbury centre of the N.Z.A.A.A., the ono mile flat handicap was won by G. N. Hill, from scratch, in 4m. 25 3-ss. A 100 yds handicap was won by 11. Opie, from scratch, in 10s.. after a very close finish. J. McHolm won the throwing' tho hammer competition, his throw being 135 ft Biin, beating the Australia!)., record from a 7ft 'circle of 132 ft 2in. [Tho world's record for throwing the 161b hammer from a 7ft circle is 170 ft 4iiin by J. Flanagan (U.S.A.). at the Olympic Games, held in London in July, 1908. The Australasian,record of 132 ft 2in, which McHolm has now broken, was held by F. J. Morgan. The previous best New Zealand record was A. Bissett's throw of 122 ft 3in. W. H. Madill threw the hammer 136 ft 4Jin at Wellington in 1900. but it was from a 9ft circle, as were also P. Byrne's (West Australia) throw of 157 ft loin, and W. Phelan, the secretary, is to ho congratulated on the perfection of all the arrangements.
