AN UNLUCKY POLICEMAN.

WOMAN TOO SMART FOR HIM. A FAITHLESS ARBITRATOR. [BY. telegeaph.— association.] Westtort, Saturday. At the Magistrate's Court to-day Constable Thos. Keenan was charged by Police-Inspector Black with having assaulted Margaret Duncan, wife of the licenseo of the Victoria Hotel, on February 1. The evidence of tho complainant went to show that she was pestered by the constable, who invited her to meet him on the night of February 1, and she accepted the invitation, somo friends following a short distance behind. When tho constable put his arm round her waist she produced a hockoy stick she had concealed, and gave him a thrashing. The constable, it was stated, had offered £10 to keep the matter quiet, and had giv«;n a man the £10 to give to tho complainant, but ho had cleared off with it. At tho conclusion of tho evidence for tho prosecution, counsel for the accused submitted that no offence had been disclosed as the complainant, in accepting the invitation, anticipated what would happen. The magistrate took this view of tho matter, and commented on the extraordinary conduct of the woman. He dismissed tho information without calling upon tho defence.
