NOTES AND COMMENTS. ■ - ■ • ■ ' :.■;■'■ :■ •:■>, ■ ~-_, •.,, ~,;;:.:'■ ,:: "'~ ] ■■■ ;;; ' f Z'.'^ffS: THE NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. . ■ The present swimming season in Australasia seems to he one of monopolies of championship?. ; First of all, W. Longvvorth won all the free-style championships of New South Wale.«, and followed it by annexing the Australian championships. And now M. E. Champion has won all the free-style championships of New Zealand, accompanying this feat by breaking, .within a few weeks, four Dominion records. . /'• This season ' Auckianders have demonstrated their swimming prowess in a very emphatic manner. Champion's success and the Waitemata Club's defeat of the Sydney team have .been' accompanied by Auckland's appropriation of the Yaldhurst shield in the first season the shield has been open ,' for competition.. Tho Auckland team's feat of V scoring 50 points in the compel it is not likely to be equalled for many yearsTho half-hundred points were secured by five swimmers—Miss L. Mackuy (3), M. E. Champion (30), 0. Welson {12), L. Weston (3), A. O'Hare (1), and W. P.. Horton (1). Of this the individual club scores f were: Waitemata 47. and Ponsonbv 3. The five nominees of tho former club (Champion, ' , Welson, O'Hare, Madigan, and Stewart) justified opinions of their merit as a squadron l , combination by winning the 500 yds relay championship of New Zealand by 25yds. Commenting .on the final carnival at . Christohurch. our special correspondent ? says that (he quarter-mile was contested by . nine- swimmers. In the fir.-!: heat Waite- '.;' mala sent out two men, Welson and McQuillan. The other starters were Rich .| i (Canterbury), Newman (Otago), and G. Soy-' mour (Hawke's Bay). In many instance* compotators *?£ wrongly disqualified from starting, as t was alleged, before their times. But the climax was reached on Thursday evening, when Miss Mackay finished second in .lacties handicap, and the referee awarded the place to another competitor on the grounds that Mis, Mackay's costume did not comply with the regulations. This style is exceptionally severe on swimmers,, and tie Sin of a second swim told heavily on the Auckland representative, W. R. Horton. In the first heat ho swam a meritorious race, being second to Poison (Canterbury) in 3m. 16s. "Horton gained a standard certificate, t£ standard being 3m. 17 4-ss. Cpotaon (Canterbury) beat McCartney (Hawko s Bay In the second heat In tho final Horton and Poison were abreast for the first 100 yds, the time being Ess. Poison drew away from Horton at about 150 yd,, but the Aucklander made many plucky efforts to keep with him. Cookson was third, not far from HortonWith just 60yds to go, Cookson put ma spurt, but his style, though extremely questionable, escaped the referees notice, 1 Olson was meanwhile swimming . a. beautiful stroke, and put the finishing touches on a brilliant swim by winning by syds. UooKson ousted Horton by a bare- yard for second place, Tho crowd gave the two* first men a magnificent reception, both begng Canterbury men. > Canterbury has now won the. breast-r,rrol:e event ever ainco its inception in 1305. ifoieon is a -worthy successor to Atkinson. A pleasing feature of tho lOOysta ladies Championship was the fact that all who "'entered came out for tho rare. Tito field included Hisses Motion (Duncdin), tri/eary (Masterton), Bade. Ostler, and Hansom (Christchurch), and Mackay (V* alternate). As expected. Miss OLeary was soon in front. At 50vds, where her time was 375.. she was four yards in front of Miss Hacker, the latter 'beim? a yard ahead of Miss Motion. The leader gamed gradually as thev proceeded, and eventual won by lOrds from the Auckland representative, who outetavod the Ote<ro nominee. Miss Motion. The winner's time was cos. and Miss Mackay's 963. Tho result of tho race endorsed the contention that tho standard sat by tho council for this race (845.) was too severe, for Miss O'Loary is an exceptionally fast swimmer, and yet she was 25.. outside tho standard. Tho 66? yds invitation scratch race afftractod eight of the fastest sprinters at the meeting. Welson, notwithstanding his mil* swim just previously, filled his ongagemerjt. Ho qualified for tho final, but had to lfcc content with third place to G. Seymour (Hawke's Bay) and L. Boston (Auckland). The Auckland contingent practically returns in a body. Welson proceeds to Waimato on holiday bent. Kerr-Taylor, Stewart, and Mulvihill will reinforce the athletic representatives, Hill and Dormor. and assis at 'a sports meeting at Lancaster Park (Christchurch) to-day, and at Palmerstor North on tho 28th inst.
