FAILING TO TAKE THE OATH
DELICIOUS OBJECTORS.
[fIY telegraph.— PßESS .association.] CiißiSTcnritcrr, Friday. Skvkral batches of youths have been before the Magistrate's Court lately, charged with failure to take the oath under tho Defence Act.
In the case of Thomas Nuttall to-day, the defendant raised the point that he had religious objection, and was consequently exempted. He was a Baptist, and the evidence 'of the Revs. A. Ager and C. R. R. Mackie was to the effect that the Church allowed a private interpretation of the New Testament, and it rested with tho individual whether his creed permitted military service or not. In another case the defendant was a member of the Spiritualist Church. Judgment was reserved in both cases. Fines were imposed in most of the other cases, the fines to be reduced if the defendants complied with the law within a week.
