THROWN OFF A TRAM.
ELDERLY MAM HURT. AN : INTERRUPTED PICNIC. An alarming accident, resulting in serious injury to a resident of Upper Vincentstreet, Mr. Robert 0,- Robinson, aged 65, occurred at the top of Wellesley-Btreet West yesterday morning. . Together with his wife, two grown-up daughters, and a party of friends, Mr. Robinson boarded a" clown oar in Hobsonstreet, at the corner of Cook-street, at about 10.30 a.m., en,route to the wharf, their intention being to spend a day at Lake Takapnna. Mr. Robinson was the last to board the car, and remained on the front platform after the tram restarted, in; order to there arrange his party's collection of picnic parcels in. such a manner that they should not .be likely to fall into the road.
Meantime the car rapidly approached the top of Wellesley-street, and directly the trolley wheels struck the curve Mr. Robinson, who is a heavily-built man, was thrown with great impetus backwards off the platform, and swung out into tho roadway. In" falling he partially turned in the effort to land on the ground facedownwards. This, action, undoubtedly saved him from more severe injury, a© he took the force Of > his fall on the loft shoulder, though he also received three deep cuts on the" forehead. '"*"" On tho car being stopped Mr. Robinson was picked up in an unconscious condition (in which state he remained for a quarter of an hour!,- and carried into the Hotel, where a medical man was soon in attendance. He found his patient to be in a state of collapse, and an examination showed -that-Mr. Robinson had sustained a /.dislocated shoulder, .besides " the ■=" wounds '"~6n"~* : " "the" *. head. These hurts ware attended to, and the patient was removed in a cab by his relatives to his own home, where he is making a good i recovery, . although suffering a good deal from shock. E!ye-witnejifaes and ■ passengers stated after the accident that the car was travelling at - a good speed on • nearing the corner. Several, of the passengers simultaneously with the accident to Mr. Robinson, were actually thrown out of their seats,' and the injured man's son-in-law was precipitated to the floor. ' -
