REFORM PARTY'S WIN.

ABSENTEES* VOTES COUNTED. PAYNE DEFEATS FOWLDS. OTAKI ELECTS ROBERTSON, DR. NEWMAN'S RETURN ASSURED. Thk official count of the votes exercised at the second ballot on Thursday has confirmed the return of all the supporters of tho Reform Party who were placed at the head of the polls in the returns published on Friday morning. The result of the second ballot in Grey Lynn will be announced this morning. The ! addition of the votes given by holders of absent voters' permits has given a majority of 38 to Mr. J. H. Payne, the Labour candidate for the seat, so that the defeat of the Ministerial candidate, the Hon. G. Fowlds, is confirmed. Mr. J. Robertson, a Labour candidate, opposed to the Government, has been returned for Otaki, with a majority of 26, defeating the former member, Mr. W. H. Field, a supporter of the Government-. Tho return of Dr. A. K. Newman, a member of the Reform Party, for Wellington East, is assured. He will succeed Mr. D. McLaren, who was tho only Labour member in the last Parliament.

Tho official count cannot materially affect the position in any of tho other districts in which second ballots were taken. The Reform Party therefore maintains its jority with 37 pledged supporters, three Labour-Oppositionists, and one Indepen-dent-Oppositionist, a total of 41; while the Government has 33 pledged supporters, and one Labour and one Independent supporter, a total of 36. Polls will "be taken to-day for the election of three Maori members, but whatever tho political result in these contests, tho Reform Party will remain in the majority. THE OTAKI SEAT. ROBERTSON'S LEAD INCREASED. [fit TELEGRAPH. —OW.V CORRESPONDENT.] Otaki, Monday. The position of the two candidates — Messrs. J. Robertson and W. H. Field— at tho second ballot for the Otaki seat has not been altered by the absentee votes, which have now come to hand.
