THE GOVERNMENT AND LARGE ESTATES.
Sir, —Is it to mislead the public and to hide their own maladministration of the millions of acres of Crown and native lands that the Government so unjustly resort to saying Mr. Massey is the champion of large landowners, he who is only a email farmer himself, and has worked his hardest on all occasions to protect and help the small farmers, and not the ■ large estates ; like Bushy Park, the large block at Mokau, and maybe many other large blocks? Could it' 'bo possible to have worse enemies .to the Dominion than the Government? Although they have been paid so liberally to he*p the progress of the colony, what have they done? They have not • opened the many millions of acres of Crown and native lands, and have driven thousands of settlers from Now Zealand through undermining the freehold tenure and the many other difficulties they have made for would-be settlers to take up any of the waste Crown lands. If they had* been at all sincere about close settling the land, as they profess to be, they could have settled every acre of the waste Crown lands during the last 10 years. ' V". L.T.
