NORFOLK ISLAND NEWS.

[FROM OUK OWN COBBESrONDEXT.]

Norfolk Islaxi>, November 16. THE s.s. Makambo, Captain Wetherall, of Burns, Philp and Co.'s Island mail line, arrived from Sydney at the Cascade landing place shortly after two a.m. on tie 6th inst., having experienced fine weather across, and making a fast run. The steamer resumed her passage to the Islands the same afternoon, after landing her mails, passengers, and cargo. Among the Makambo's passengers to the island was a cattle inspector, Mr. Saunderson, who has been sent here by I the Government in Sydney, to inspect the Island stock which, it was thought, was infected with tuberculosis. Mr. Saunderson, however, has made a thorough investigation, and, so far, it is stated, has found nothing harmful. He returns to Sydney by the Malaita, which is expected to-day. . The whaling season is over, and the boats are hauled up. Only six whales havo been captured, making 18 tuns of oil, all of which will be exported to Sydney. This has been a very poor season for the men engaged in the industry. News has been received by the mission authorities here of the death of one of their missionaries at Santa Cruz, the Rev. G. F. Bury, a young priest just out from England. The cause of death was blood poisoning. , The Island chaplain, who is also mission treasurer, the Ven. Archdeacon Comins, D.D., retires at the end of next month for good, and will leave the island on a visit to England. The Archdeacon has been connected with mission and island work for 35 years, and is highly respected. He will be greatly missed. Bishop Wilson is looking for a man to fill his place in the island chaplaincy. The weather lately has been unusually fine with a tendency to dryness. The death occurred yesterday morning of Mrs. Seebury Bataille, a widow, aged 63. She had been under medical attention for some time past ,and her death was not unexpected. Mrs. Bataille was a daughter of the late Jonathan Adams, who was a grandson of John Adams, of the Bounty, and was born at Pitcairn Island before the exodus. Some years ago Mrs. Bataille married a Frenchman of that name, and leaves a large grown-up family.
