UNDESIRABLE CHARACTERS.
fßr TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.} Whaxgarei, Monday. Following upon the recent epidemic of incendiarism in Whangarei, the local police have been ridding the town of some undesirable characters. On Saturday a vagrant named George Eadie appeared before the Court, and was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment. This morning another vagrant named William Maitland, who was found on Saturday night sleeping in a loft above a livery stablo, was sentenced to six months' imprisonment. Sergeant Moore, of the police, expressed the opinion that the recent fires were due to this class of men being at large.
