THE CLERK'S ADVANTAGES.
Sir, — am" one of the many men employed in this city in clerical work who are well paid and contented with their positions, and have no wish to be classed with i a set of malcontents and agitators who, having their own axes to grind, are trying to spread discord between employers and employees to suit their own ends. 1 should like to see a meeting of all clerks opposed to the union in euch force as to settle once for all any doubt as to which eido is in the majority, if any such doubt exists in the minds of the public. That the rate of pay should bo based on ago only, without any reference to capability, steadiness of character, and trustworthiness, is absurd to begin with, 'JLhat a prohibitive rate ot pay per hour lor,, overtime should be demanded shows an ignorance ot tiie exigencies of business at certain seasons of the year that says little indeed for the interest complainants take in whatever business they may, unfortunately lor that business, be connected with. Work has to be done during the busy season alter the usual office hours but surely the majority oi clerks will feel with me that wo are only, doing our duty in cheerfully tackling such work without complaining, especially as we not only get our fortnight's annual holiday on full pay, but also receive lull pay when on the sick list, to say nothing of cash bonuses during the year, Ihe idea, of being lorced to join' a union of which one disapproves, and so giving up one a. freedom ot action, it seems to me must bo repulsive to one's sense of self-respect Cashier.
