[BY TELEGRAm — OWS COKnSfIPQNUENT.] CuniSTHHUitai, Sunday. Gold Bird was staunch favourite for the Port Cooper Hurdle Handicap, Idealism, Tyrannic, and Passive being next best backed. The favourite, ridden for the first time at the meeting by T. Pritcbard, duly won after a good finish. There, was a meeting of stewards later in the dav, and as a result Gold Bird, his trainer (C. Pritchard), and bis rider on the. first and second days (V. Coleman) were disqualified for 12 months for inconsistent running. I , offer no opinion in the meantime pending a possible appeal.'' I may, however, state tho fact, which : was probably
the cause of the trouble, that there was nothing in his earlier form at the meeting to justify the way the money rolled in for him to-day. Backers fancied St. Tony, Crosbie, Fisticuff, Lady .Moutoa, and Bronze in that order for the. Crcssy Welter Handicap, but nothing hud a chance with Culprit, who led all the way. it is hard to understand how" she was allowed to pay such a dividend, as she had a very easy proposition compared with the tasks she had taken on earlier in the meeting. Pilgrim's Wav was a warm favourite lit the Seymour Handicap, and he was in front from the start, beating the second favourite, Aphaea, without, effort. It is a pity he is not sound. Kquitas, Effort, Nvland, and Byron was the order of fancy in the Members' Handicap. The race was responsible for a tine performance by Kquitas, who made all her own running, and won like a good one from Byron, who ran the journey out well, Nvland only laded out in the last, 50yds, but Effort was never prominent. Sir Oeo. Clifford started Glcntinium. Brown Owl, and Scottish Star in the Pioneer Handicap, and they had a call in the betting over Mr. Greenwood's pair (Gnome and Ilatfelal witii Bandore as third choice. Gnome confirmed the good opinion formed of him earlier in the meeting by staving too well for tho others, and 1 fancy he will he very useful later on. Anna Carlovna ran the five furlongs out well, and she is better than her earlier running suggested. Brown Owl, who was making her first appearance, finished strongly, and created a favourable impression. There were six starters for the Stead Gold tup. Los Angeles and Vice-Admiral (coupled) were backed as if defeat was out of the question, while Sir Geo. Clifford's pair (Madam Madcap ami Counterfeit) had a slight call over Miscount. It was a very solid race all the way. Miscount set, off at a hot puce, and for the first five furlongs he. was about, two lengths out from Los Angelos and Madam Madcap, ' with Counterfeit going eaailv three, lengths away, and Vice-Admiral quite a k'ng wav back, possibly 10 lengths behind he was about two lengths out from Los Angelos was beaten, and Counterfeit commenced to put in a run at the entrance to the straight. sue was in (dose attendance on Miscount, and before the distance was reached the race was all over, as Counterfeit had Miscount's measure, and it waa onlv a question of how much she would win bv. She eventually ran home a ridiculously easy winner bv half-a-dozen lengths In front of Miscount. Vice-Admiral, who finished with a great run. • just headed Madam Madcap for third place, with St. Petersburg fourth and Los Angelos a bad last. As usual, when Sir Geo. Clifford is successful in an important race, the win was very popular, the outburst of cheering being quite of an enthusiastic order. Counterfeit's performance was quite high-class, as she established a fre.-h New Zealand record. I ain convinced she in the, best three-year-old out, and if she had waited on the ethers" in the. Derby, I feel sure she would have beaten Masterpiece and Miscount in that race. Los Angelos ran much below expectations, the solid pace all the way settling him. Miscount performed well, but met an extra good filly. He is certainly an unlucky coll, with one win and five seconds as his record for this seafc The Randolph Handicap, the .Tidiest celling race ever run in New Zealand, attracted a field of 16, Rurik, Faunns, Merry Frank, and Clanmena being the order of favouritism. "<"'« looked a winner till 50yds from home, but Gold Battery finished with a late run, and got up on the post. He is a very useful sprinter that will 'There were 17 starters for the Fendalton Handicap, backers sorting out Mendip, Rose Noble, Electraltoff, and Tannhauser for most attention. it. was a fine, race all the way, Rose Noble drawing out in the last bit. and winning by a narrow margin from Bonny Glen and Birkline. Of the hers Tannhauser ran well, but I never aw Mendip after the first two furlongs, and Elect knff was never in the danger zone. The chief winning owners at the meeting were : -Sir Geo- Clifford, £4095; Messrs. Stead and Greenwood. £2775; the Hon J. D.. Ormond, £1500; and Mr. Highden, £1290.
