EAST COAST PRODUCE TRADE.

A meeting of the Council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday afternoon. In the absence through indisposition of the president (Mr. Leo. M. Myers), the vice-president (Mr. G. Elliott) presided. There were also present: Messrs. S. J. Nathan, J. H. Gunson, G. Aickin, F. E. N. Gaudin, A. B. Robertson, S. A. Loiiguet, G. L. Peacocke, and J. Reid. A letter was received from the local manager of the Union Company (Mr. Irvine) in reply to the complaint regarding the length of time elapsing between the trips of the steamers employed in the East Coast produce trade. The letter stated that the matter had been referred to the head office of the company, which was " fully convinced that the presence of a large steamer (the Waitemata) in this trade is not looked upon with disfavour by the largest of the produce importers in Auckland." Mr. Gunson said that the assumption that the local importers were satisfied was not correct. , . On his motion the matter was referred to the Produce Committee. A letter was received from the Prime Minister stating that the request for an amendment of the Municipal Corporations Act giving a right of appeal to the Borough Council against decisions of the inspector of fire escapes would be considered by the Government. The Auckland Hardware Association notified that its committee did not consider it advisable to alter the present terms of trade, which had Jong been the custom of the trade. The Warehousemen's Association also wrote stating that it did not think it probable that any change would be made. Th<S Warehousemen's Association wrote advocating the adoption of a uniform form of Customs declaration for use in Australia. and New Zealand. It was decided to endorse the request. A report was received from the Finance Committee on the scale of proposed auctioneers' charges submitted by the Auckland Auctioneers' Association. The report was adopted with some slight modifications, and will be submitted to the Auctioneers' Association.
