AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
I Sir, —Tnere is nothing .more healthy than clean sport, and yet i am-surprised and astonished to see .so little ■ encouragement given to the Auckland Amateur Athletio Club in this city. There are any amount of wealthy men; who, no doubt, _ have 'be*m athletes" in their young . days; 'why -don't those men give . trophies to the club, and thus- induce large .fields? -And why don't the ladies of Auckland, attend the. meetings, 'and bring their sisters, their cousins, and their aunts? The amateur- meeting in our ■ lovely domain ought to attract thousands ,•instead of a;few paltry hundreds,- as is the Case' at 'present. '1,-hope this" appeal will have some effect, and; lead toy-many trophies being given for the "meeting on Saturday, the 18th inst., arid also that there may be thousands of onlookers' to ecu what the young blood of the ' present .-day ii capable of accomplishing.. '; : ,;.V' • ' - Feancis Hull.
