THE ELECTORAL ROLLS.

A CONFUSING CENSUS, , . ''' " ■■' ' : ' ; '-.:.:■;■ >;Jll|| The muddle that was made in connection with the electoral census has necessitated the adoption of further measures to secure complete legal rolls in the Auckland ; elec- ' torates. s A district registrar informed a'HEtffipl reporter yesterday that it was anticipate,! I that the census would have disclosed wbojjf was absent from the district, and : these: who ought not to remain on the roll. l(/ -■ had, however, failed in both respects, : 'Sndfi| therefore, it became unsafe to remove|§ many names from the roll. The position; at present is that no names are being re® moved from the roll, unless the registrar; is positively satisfied of his right to r*j move them. The recent electoral census! ■ failed because it did not show the absent tees in every case, nor, in some cases, who Vl ' are the occupants of houses. In certain instances people who were in England! when tho census was taken have now returned to Auckland, and their names have to be kept on the roll, despite the census.; ; As far as the registrars are concerned, 1 the purging of the rolls is now proceeding ■ automatically by-notices of transfers. Sub. enumerators are being sent round the vari- V: ous districts to hunt up those who havej so far failed to send in their scheduled. 1.By the time the election has arrived,! said the registrar, "the rolls will be in aw very fair condition." It will be seen, how^ 1 ever, that all who propose to exercise their votes at the forthcoming general election* would' be well advised to satisfy themeelves that they are duly enrolled.
