LIGHT LINE RAILWAY.

ALPU-WHANG AREI PROPOSAL.

[from our own CORRESPONDENT.] A' RE-survey has now been commenced of the proposed light line to connect Waipu with deep water in Whangarei Harbour at One-tree Point. Time has proved that the district can never hope for.a, satisfactory outlet by means of the Waipu River, which is bar-bound, and in .addition the channel is constantly, silting up. At present much of the trade seeks an outlet at Marsden Point, 12 miles away, and the arterial way is scarcely more than a winding track amid the sandhills. Much money has been spent in the past in endeavours to improve the Waipu River for navigation, and with a negative result. The project of a light line-of railway to deep water is not a new one, and as far back as 18 years ago the route was first surveyed. It is a feasible proposition, and the route presents no engineering difficulties. Much good country would be tapped, and the railway would bring Waipu and the contiguous areas into close touch with Whangarei, which in the near future will probably be a distributing port. Waipu has languished simply for want of an outlet. The light line of railway would l prove its salvation", and its early construction is being looked forward to' by all the settlers in the district.
