THE ELECTORAL CENSUS.

ENROLLING THE PEOPLE.

The results of the electoral census, which was taken in the urban areas on Sunday evening, -will not be known for some days. The work of 1 collecting the schedules distributed to householders in the town districts was commenced yesterday, and will be completed" in a few days. The compilation and summarising of the information contained in the schedules will then be made by the registrars of electors. The purpose of the census, as explained by the Legislature Amendment Act of last session, is the enrolling of all persons qualified to be enrolled, who are not already enrolled. It is definitely stated on the householders' schedules that persons who are not enrolled must make application for enrolment on the proper forms, and attention is drawn to them by the insertion of crosses opposite their names on the schedules. The canvassers,,- are providing each householder with the necessary number of' forms, which will subsequently be forwarded' to. the registrars. - :, •-V " -The census is likely to prove expensive. The canvassers are being paid 10s per day, which is probably only a fair compensation for the work they have to do. But it has been decided that each canvasser will require 10 days v to complete the distribution and -collection of schedules, and each canvasser has been assured of a payment of £5 for his work. The man who has to collect 150 or 200 schedules, :as some will have to, will no doubt earn that sum in full, but not a few of the canvassers have to collect less than 50 papers: ,tOne canvasser stated yesterday that he had : completed his share of the work in. two '. half-days, distributing and gathering in that time 28 schedules, and in r another instance a; canvasser I earned his £5 ; by delivering and 'collecting 20 papers. • ' •. .".".". \
