A' j,aj»ob and representative meeting of settlers was held in the Public Hall on Saturday afternoon to consider the advisability of forming a farmers' steamship company, to trade between Waiuku and Onehunga. Mr. : Albretch; occupied the chair,, and in opening the i meeting said they all were fully aware that a strong agitation had been going on for; a■■ considerable time for better water carriage between Waiuku and Onehunga. ' The following resolutions were carried unanimously:— " That the Northern Steamship Company be asked to give a definite written statement as to what they are prepared to do to meet the requirements of the settlers of this district interested in the water carriage of passengers and cargo around the Manukau Harbour, stating at about what date'these improvements in the carrying service may be expected to come into operation, and also as to what extent they are prepared to meet the wishes of the settlers by way of a reduction in' passenger and freight tariff when the new service is inaugurated." ' " That a committee of nine be now set up, of which five shall be a quorum, to consider the answers received from the Northern Steamship Company to the questions contained in the resolution carried by this meeting, and should they consider the answers received are unsatisfactory, they be empowered by this meeting to formulate a scheme for the formation of a settlers' carrying company, to operate, in the Manukau Harbour", and issue a prospectus for such company. In the meantime, that they be instructed to canvass- the various districts with a view of ascertaining to what extent financial support and guarantee of business may be expected from the settlers should the formation of 'the company become* necessary." A show of hands of those present will-, ing to take up shares and guarantee support was taken, about 90 per cent, of those in the room assenting, and, in addition, it was announced that 10 had stated their willingness to take up 100 shares each of £1 per share. > Eventually, a representative committee was formed, consisting of Messrs. J. E. Makgill and C. T. Barriball (Waiuku), J. Hamilton ,Awitu), J. H. Hcrrold (Waipipi), J. McLaren (Waihau), W. T. Jones, Monro (Pollok), W. West. (Otaua), and J. A. Albretch (Packington).! A unanimous vote of thanks was passed to the Farmers' Union for the active part taken by them in the matter.
