SUGGESTED NEW SERVICE

Proposals have been made to the Australian Federal Government as to the desirability of establishing a steamship service between Melbourne, Vancouver, and San Francisco. Ministers have been given to understand that certain companies aro prepared to provide a service on condition that the Government guaranteed them against loss. The Cabinet remitted tho matter to the Minister for Agriculture, with a request that he should submit particulars as to tho products likely to bo exported to tho Pacific Coast, to enable tho Government to determine _ whether trade would justify it in subsidising tho service.
