AMERICAN NAVAL SCANDAL. • Rear-admiral Barry, who has been in command of the Second Division of tha Pacific Fleet, has been placed on the re* tired" list, his place being taken by RearAdmiral Thomas. The action was taken before the publication of certain allegations by the officers of the flagship \Vesj> "virginia which reflected on the moral character of the rear-admiral.. At an inquiry into the charges referred to, the officers described what they had seen through the open porthole of the commander's cabin. Mr. Gannon, Speaker of the American House of Representatives, has received a peculiar letter, which does not bear the writer's name, but which purports to be " From a woman in. love with a Japi anese officer." The. writer states that she has discovered the secret of het lover's mission to America, and that it is simply for the purpose of espionage. She asks that her. letter be accepted "aa coming from a patriotic American, despite her association with the Japanese." ■ ' BOMB FROM AN AEROPLANE. „ Lieutenant Crissy, an American officerflying with Parmalee, on the hitter's aeroplane, near San Francisco, dropped a ] shrapnel bomb at a height of 475 ft. The shell exploded on the desired spot. ' A VALUABLE PAINTING It is reported thai the "original" of tha masterpiece of Correggio, "The Education of Cupid," has been discovered to be a duplicate from the Brush, it is supposed,, of Van Dyckl The painting was bought by the nation in 1838 for £52.000. That which is now claimed as the original .was purchased by a young lawyer 15 years f agq at a sale at Luton for 12s 6d. WIRELESS TELEGRAPHY. The Hamburg-American steamer Europa, which is now being built, will probably be the first chip, to be able to .communicate \ by wireless direct with shore stations in any part of the Atlantic. . ■. .
