WHARF "CASUALS."
[BY TELEGRAPH.OWN correspondent.]
Wellington, Sunday. , Upwards 'of 1700 men are at present casually employed on the wharves at Wellington. Inquiries in official quarters show that while the volume of work is greater this year than it was last, December the available "casuals" have considerably increased, and work has not been too plentiful. In consequence., during the last couple of months no less than 300 new men have come on to the books of the Wharf Labourers' Union. Against this, however, many men casually employed at the 'harbour have left W«llm«toiu. •
