THAMES DEEP LEVELS.

CROSSCUT BEING PUSHED AHEAD. Satisfactory air conditions having been established in the crosscut at the 1000 ft level from the Queen of Beauty shaft, Thames, the work of driving has • been resumed with day labour. At a meeting of the General Purposes Committee of the Deep Levels Mining Board yesterday it was decided to push the work vigorously ahead, and to call for tenders lor 500 ft of driving (labour only) returnable on Monday week. Speaking to a Herald representative subsequently, Mr. C. Hudeon, chairman of the committee, stated that the ventilation conditions at the face were 60 satisfactory that one of the pipes had to be taken away as there was such a draught that it blew the candles out. "It is anticipated," he said, "now that the conditions are so improved that there will be no difficulty in getting tenders from reliable men. to carry on. the work at a moderate price. The hopper and tramway have been erected by the • contractor, and arrangements for carting the spoil to the foreshore at 6d a load have been renewed. Pending the successful tenderers entering upon their work, wages men are being employed to keep the face going under the supervision of the Advisory Committee;" .
