MINING NEWS.

OLD HAURAKI.

IMPORTANT DEVELOPMENT SCHEME.

An important scheme for the development of the Old Hauraki mine. Goromandel, is projected. Mr. C. Hudson, chairman of directors of the company, states that the mine manager is at present examining the Union Beach shaft on the foreshore with the intention of clearing out the drive at the 180 ft level, and attempting to pick up the new reef being worked from the Old Hauraki shaft. " The distance separating the two points," said Mr. Hudson, is - somewhere between 600 »nd 1000 ft, and the collar of. the Union Beach shaft, being right down on the sea level, is therefore much lower than the shaft from which the Old Hauraki Company is at present working. Before the Union Beach shaft can be utilised, however, it is necessary that one or two of the old abandoned shafts on the foreshore should be properly filled in, as Mr. Shepherd, mine manager, is of opinion that a great deal of the water coming into the Hauraki mine is sea-water which has filtered in through these defective shafts. Mr. Shepherd has applied to the Government Inspector of Mines to take action, and the inspector will probably notify the owners of the ground- on which these shafts are situated to have them made secure."
